In discussing philosophy of science, some have talked about science1 vs science2 or science vs scienceprime, it may be time to speak of anti-Pharma vs anti-pharma. By anti-Pharma I mean those of us who are critical of the corporate powers who run the pharmaceutical industry and of much that they do in marketing their products. By anti-pharma I mean a subgroup of those who question whether medicine is useful at all. The reaction to Boehringer Ingelheim's new drug flibanserin, which some have called "pink Viagra" has brought out anti-pharma in force. Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor and publisher of The Nation, points out that many who saw value in a drug that adds to men's sexual pleasure take a very different view of a drug that offers women more sexual enjoyment. Anyone see some sexism in their reactions?
