As part of its Better Benefits, Better Health Initiative, the White House has described the benefits senior citizens like myself are already able to receive under the new health insurance reform act. If you are over sixty-five, you are now eligible for new benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Seniors and people with disabilities on Medicare is now eligible to obtain certain preventive services, such as mammograms and colonoscopies, for free. Everyone on Medicare can also get an annual wellness exam from their participating physician or health professional for free. Provisions addressing the "donut hole" in Part D prescription coverage have also gone into effect with nearly 4 million people having received a $250 rebate check for their "donut hole" expenses and another nearly 48,000 Medicare enrollees having saved $38 million through the discounts provided under the Affordable Care Act for drugs purchased while in the "donut hole" prior to it finally being closed by provisions of the health reform law that take effect later.
